A Prayer, Push Ups and Piffy 2.0
AP returns to the street album scene to deliver his latest project, a follow up to 2010’s A Prayer, Push Ups and Piffy. Using the same title that is where most of the similarities end between the two projects. A Prayer Push Ups and Piffy 2.0 is AP’s graduation from celebrated cypher material to accomplished song writing. It was a evolution that has been coming for years but now that time has arrived and AP has delivered an outstanding effort worthy of major label consideration.
AP declares to the world “I Am Music” in a introductory manner that sets the tone for the entire album. Although AP only uses one verse on the track it goes to show how far he has grown as a song writer as it is accompanied by the syncopated crooning of Corey Kelly and Ebony Porter. There is a complete video that accompanies this song that can be seen on you tube. “My Life is Gonna Change” is another well-written song where AP brings the listener from his early beginnings to his current stature as a successful MC who forsakes temporary pleasures in order to dedicate himself solely to his craft. “Smoke With the Mayor” is a party song which should find a home in the I-pods of those who indulge in piffy as well as casual listeners who enjoy clever pop culture references by AP and soulful singing delivered by Clark.
“From Nuttin” gives the complete journey of AP’s history in autobiographical fashion in a visual manner that one can almost see the rise of AP as well as guest star 360. “Suc-cess” continues to follow in the album’s theme of hard work paying off. AP goes as far as to say he is obsessed with it which is a strong theory within itself as to the dedication it takes to make it within the music industry. “Boeing” is the accumulation of all the hard work as AP and guest star Dre Skuff kick lines about enjoying the end result of their grind. “She Wanna Be in my Presence” finds AP explaining himself to a young woman why he has to sacrifice time with her in order to wrap up business within recording studios and promoting his projects. It is a honest depiction of the dilemma most artists deal with as it comes to balancing relationships and a music career.
AP does not abandon his cypher roots as he delivers classic punch lines within well placed interludes titled “Stinger” and “PPP 2.0”. Guest appearances are kept to a minimum this go round but AP still manages to find time to share the spotlight with prolific Trenton artists such as Kilogram on “Good 2 Me”, Alamaj and Deuce Jones on the Underworld alumni track “Therapy” and T-dot and Big Ooh on the laid back track “All in my Mind”. A Prayer, Push Up and Piffy 2.0 is a very well rounded effort that covers multiple topics and ranges of style. AP declaration of working like a slave to eat like a king is on full display throughout this collection of songs and it should only be a matter of time before major label interest is the by product of all that hard work, sacrifice, focus and dedication. http://www.datpiff.com/AP-the-MAYOR-Prayer-Push-ups-Piffy-20-ppp20-...
